Steve Carney

Class of 2026 Hall of Fame Inductee

Steve Carney is one of Minnesota’s most experienced fishing guides and esteemed outdoor communicators. With a guiding career spanning over 38 years, he has dedicated nearly as much time to his work as an outdoor writer. Steve began his writing journey with Outdoor News and has maintained an impeccable record of never missing a deadline—a commitment that continues to this day. His extensive contributions also include more than 27 years of articles for the Blaine-Coon Rapids Newspaper.

A familiar voice on the airwaves, Steve has contributed to a weekly fishing segment on WCCO Radio for more than 36 years. His broadcast expertise also extends to appearances on KSTP AM 1500, KFAN Radio, and WCCO Television.

Steve’s guiding career began with corporate accounts in the Twin Cities before he transitioned his operations to Western Minnesota, where he still guides on a regular basis. His business, founded in 1987 as Metro Fishing Guide Service, is known today as Carney Outdoors.

In addition to his guiding ventures, Steve’s prolific writing includes 12 years of monthly columns for Fins & Feathers magazine, 13 years with Minnesota Sportsman Magazine, 25 years for Dakota Outdoor Magazine, 27 years in the ABC Newspaper, and 21 years with Minnesota Sun Newspapers.

Widely recognized across the upper Midwest, Steve has appeared on numerous radio and television stations throughout Minnesota and North Dakota. He is also a highly regarded public speaker, conducting informative clinics for anglers across the regional fishing community.
